The Attraversamenti Multipli festival celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2025!

25 years lived with passion and resilience!
25 years of experimentation and exploration in the vast universe of contemporary performing arts, intertwining dance, theatre, music and video.
25 years of unusual interactions with public spaces, creating unexpected encounters between artists, spectators, communities and urban landscapes, building unprecedented boundaries between art and life with an eye on the horizon.

Since 2001, Attraversamenti Multipli has chosen to operate in urban spaces; in 2001, a festival dedicated to contemporary performing arts in urban landscapes was a strange and unusual choice.
Over the past 25 years, the festival has presented itself as a multiple organism/body, has been nomadic, has traversed different spaces/languages/practices, has inhabited squares, streets, underground stations, universities, public parks, regenerated places, has created relationships with other artistic bodies, with communities, with spaces/projects of activism, and has continued to experiment.

Attraversamenti Multipli is conceived and curated by Margine Operativo under the artistic direction of Alessandra Ferraro and Pako Graziani.

Margine Operativo is a multi/transdisciplinary artistic group.
It creates, produces and stages shows and performances that blend different languages,
as well as videos and visual works. It develops and curates projects dedicated to contemporary performing arts.

COEXISTENCE is the keyword/theme accompanying the 25th edition of Attraversamenti Multipli, while the trajectory and word that guided us in the 2023 and 2024 editions continues to be present in the background: fragile.

Attraversamenti Multipli 2025 places the concept of COEXISTENCE with others at the centre of its actions.
Our planet is fragile, increasingly affected by wars, climate emergencies, inequalities and humanitarian crises. We live on a damaged planet, but it is the only planet we have. In this global scenario, the theme of sustainability – environmental and social – and the possibility of building patterns and dynamics of COEXISTENCE become vital. We are not self-sufficient; we are a complex and articulated reality where everything is connected through non-linear relationships: earth, climate, human beings, animals, plants, cultures.

Coexistence is a stance, a starting point from which to build trajectories capable of including and welcoming, capable of defining planet Earth as a place where everyone has the right to exist and live (human beings, cultures, animals, plants, etc.).

Attraversamenti Multipli 2025 continues its exploration of public spaces, researching interactions/expansions between different artistic languages and creating dynamics to experiment with innovative and eco-sustainable intertwining between performing arts practices, landscapes and communities. As part of a project launched in 2022 focused on sustainability, in 2025 it will once again engage with the urban nature of the Torre del Fiscale Park (Rome), inhabiting it with site-specific performances and performative formats in dialogue with the extraordinary natural, historical and archaeological landscape of this green lung of the polycentric metropolis, with a green perspective. It offers two stages in dialogue with the landscapes of the village of Toffia (Rieti) dedicated to new generations of spectators.

Again within the framework of environmental sustainability, part of the programme takes place at unusual times: each day, the festival begins with performances accompanied by natural light, then moves into the luminous dimension of sunset/twilight and finally night.
The element that unites the various performance formats is their “soft” approach to relating to the audience and the landscape, creating welcoming and inclusive habitats. This relational dynamic builds a generative artistic line of research capable of outlining an ecological mode of relations between people and between humans and the environment.

brief travel notes:
biodiversity, future, coexistence

Biodiversity sustains human life. Yet every indicator describing the state of nature, or biodiversity, on a global scale shows a decline

The 2024 Global Living Planet Index shows an average decline of 73% in monitored populations of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish between 1970 and 2020. By the end of this century, scientists predict the extinction of 20-50% of all living species on Earth.
(WWF, 2024, Living Planet Report 2024 – A System in Peril. WWF, Gland, Switzerland)

These data lead us to reflect on the future habitability of the Earth and on how to trigger forms and processes of coexistence and cooperation to reduce and counteract the damage caused by the environmental and social crisis.

Guidelines for orientation:

“The relationship with otherness requires commitment; it is not given ‘a priori’ and, at the same time, it is not limited to simple physical proximity” (Laura Bolella)

“Action is therefore a relationship between two or more subjects, human and non-human. Ultimately, something is needed to catalyse stories, to provoke them. With a strong subject and objects, there is no story: the strong always win.” (Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing, The Mushroom at the End of the World: On the Possibility of Life in Capitalist Ruins)

“It is important to know which stories create worlds, which worlds create stories.”
(Donna Haraway, Chthulucene: Surviving on an Infected Planet)

“The margin is a radical place of possibility, a space of resistance. A place capable of offering the possibility of a radical perspective from which to look, create, imagine alternatives and new worlds. (bell hooks, “In Praise of the Margin”)

Traces of the path of Attraversamenti Multipli:

Attraversamenti Multipli is a multidisciplinary festival that questions the relationships between contemporary performing arts and the present by placing shows and performances in urban landscapes and regenerated places.
Attraversamenti Multipli is conceived and realized by the artistic group Margine Operativo.
The first edition took place in 2001 in Rome.
Attraversamenti Multipli for many years has been nomadic, crossing in every edition different places and spaces of the metropolis of Rome: from the subway stations to spaces of industrial archeology, such as Officine Marconi (ex Italcable), from the Universities of Tor Vergata and La Sapienza to the pedestrian islands (Pigneto, S. Lorenzo, Largo Spartaco). Lorenzo, Largo Spartaco and Casal Bertone), from libraries (Biblioteca Goffredo Mameli) to multipurpose spaces such as GGarage Zero, Esc Atelier and Centrale Preneste Teatro, with a predilection for redeveloped and regenerated places that symbolize the transformations of the city.

Attraversamenti Multipli was conceived and created by the artistic group Margine Operativo.

In 2014 it took place not only in Rome but also in Naples: in the art stations of the subway. In 2017 it inhabited a regenerated space in the historical center of Genoa. In some editions it proposed events in the province of Rome and in the Lazio Region.
Since 2017 – within a project arc that extends until 2022 – the festival has chosen to “inhabit” with its artistic actions a popular and densely inhabited area of Rome, the Quadraro district and one of its fulcrums: the pedestrian island of Largo Spartaco, a space that the festival had already crossed with some events in previous editions.

During its 22 editions it has been supported by Roma Capitale, Lazio Region and the Province of Rome. In 2021 and 2022 it was supported by the MIC – Ministry of Culture.
The start-up in 2001 took place with a grant from Zone Attive.
In 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 a cross-disciplinary event of Attraversamenti Multipli – which ran from dusk to dawn – was part of the program of the NOTTE BIANCA of Rome.

In 2014, 2015 and 2016 the project was declared by Roma Capitale “Festival of particular interest for the cultural life of the City 2014-2016”.
In 2014 Attraversamenti Multipli was also held in Naples with the support of the Universal Forum of Cultures and UNESCO. In 2017 Attraversamenti Multipli took place also in Genoa with the support of Compagnia di San Paolo in the context of “ORA! Linguaggi contemporanei Produzioni innovative”.
In 2016, 2017 and 2019 a part of the festival was intertwined with the project “CONTACT ZONES_performing arts in urban spaces” realized by Margine Operativo and supported by the European Union within the Creative Europe program.

In 2021 the book “ATTRAVERSAMENTI MULTIPLI 2001 – 2020. A journey through the mobile horizons of contemporary performing arts” edited by Alessandra Ferraro and Pako Graziani – published by Editoria & Spettacolo.
